There is no single right way to build a jewellery business.
It doesn’t have to mean constant growth, being permanently visible online, or filling every hour you have available.
I believe in building a business around the life you actually want to live, one that can move with your seasons, leave room for quieter periods, and make space for family, health, hobbies or simply a day outside when the weather is too good to waste.
It should also leave room for your values. You might choose to make slowly, source carefully, resist constant launches or simply decide that bigger isn’t necessarily better.
A lot of my mentoring comes back to that: working out what matters, simplifying what doesn’t, putting better systems underneath the repetitive parts, and building something sustainable enough that you still have a life beyond the bench.

FROM ONE JEWELLER TO ANOTHER
I’m Kerry, the jeweller and founder behind Thorn & Claw.
I’ve built the business from my studio in Dorset, learning firsthand what it takes to create a distinct world around the work and put enough structure underneath it to keep the whole thing standing.
Like most independent jewellers, I’ve worn almost every hat along the way.
Making. Photography. Words. Websites. Emails. Packaging. Customer service. Planning. Admin.
Before Thorn & Claw, my professional background was in marketing and content, largely within the charity sector. That work also took me into print, publishing, television and media, working with broadcasters, charities, public figures and celebrities.
I came to Jewellers Academy first as a student. I later began working with them and now mentor independent jewellers through my work with the Jewellers Business Academy.
So my approach comes from both sides: years of marketing experience, and the much messier reality of building and running a small jewellery business yourself.
I’m particularly fond of planning, systems, and finding ways to make the whole thing a little easier to carry.
