The magpie has always been difficult to ignore. Clever, noisy, watchful and tangled through British superstition, it is a bird people have long treated as omen.

Named for the Old Norse galdr, an incantation spoken or sung aloud, this talisman belongs to the territory of voice: what we say, what we withhold, and what changes once words are given form.

All materials are thoughtfully sourced and each piece is made with care, in a way that aims to tread lightly on the earth.

THE MYTH

Magpies have carried a strange reputation through British folklore for centuries.

They have been treated as birds of omen, their number read for signs of fortune or misfortune, and the old habit of greeting a lone magpie still survives in many places today. Their chatter, intelligence and boldness have made them impossible to ignore, and perhaps that is part of why so much superstition has gathered around them.

In old folklore, magpies were said to carry a drop of devil’s blood beneath their tongues, giving them the gift of speech and prophecy. This is where Galdr finds its meaning.

The Old Norse word galdr refers to a spell or incantation performed through the voice: something sung, spoken or chanted into the world. The name belongs here because the beak is the instrument of the bird’s voice, and because words have always carried more than information. They warn, provoke, confess, promise, wound and change things.

From beak to talisman

Galdr begins with a real magpie beak.

The original was carefully lifecast so its exact shape could be carried into silver: the long taper, the ridges, the hollows and the natural asymmetry of the beak itself.

The cast form is held within a hand-forged silver frame, giving the pendant its distinctive silhouette while leaving the character of the original object intact.

Crafting & shipping timescales

Each talisman is handmade to order and will usually be ready to ship within approximately 4–6 weeks. During especially busy periods, this may take a little longer.
