Straif - Blackthorn earrings in solid sterling silver
Real Blackthorn, lifecast from the wild and made permanent in solid sterling silver earrings.
Handcrafted from real Blackthorn branches, these solid sterling silver earrings carry the raw texture and strength of the tree itself. Rooted in Celtic folklore and forged with intention, they are lightweight yet striking.
Easy to adorn, but anything but soft. Perfect for everyday wear or as a ritual piece layered with other talismans.
Worn as a single thorn or a pair, they bring a darker edge to the everyday. A reminder that you can move through the world with softness without surrendering your edges.

THE MYTH
Blackthorn has long carried a darker reputation in British and Irish folklore. Its white blossom appears before the leaves, while the thorned branches remain bare and forbidding. A plant of hedgerows and boundaries, it has become entwined with protection, hardship and the darker turning of the year.
The name Straif is traditionally associated with Blackthorn in later ogham lore. The tree itself has long occupied the edges: hedgerow and woodland, cultivated ground and wild, protection and threat.
In later folklore, Blackthorn is also associated with the Cailleach, the divine hag of winter and wilderness. It suits her well. A thorned plant that flowers in the cold, offering beauty without surrendering its defences.
Straif takes that contradiction and makes it wearable. Two thorns, light against the skin, with all the character of the plant that grew them.
Explore the folklore, symbolism and history of Blackthorn
From thorn to talisman
The original Blackthorn grows at the edge of my garden in Dorset, beneath the oaks where the cultivated ground begins to give way to the wild.
Thorns from the plant were carefully lifecast, preserving their naturally irregular surface, ridges and sharp organic lines before being transformed into sterling silver.
Nothing has been smoothed into perfect symmetry. Their shape belongs to the plant that grew them.
Each Straif begins with something grown rather than drawn. Thorns from the wild, made permanent in silver.

You can choose between a ball chain or belcher chain, with multiple lengths available to suit how you like to wear your pieces. Chain length is the total length of the chain from end to end.
- 18–20" sits around the collarbone, with 20" resting close to the heart and being the most commonly chosen length.
- 22–24" falls slightly lower on the chest, ideal for everyday wear or layering.
- 26–30" creates a longer, more statement silhouette, especially suited to larger talismans.
If you’re unsure, 20" is a balanced and widely loved choice. If the length doesn’t feel quite right, I’m always happy to exchange your chain.
